A Picnic In The Lap Of Nature

There is a panic among parents and experts alike of children spending more and more time indoors which increased after the lockdown due to Covid19 pandemic. The crisis has a name now : Nature deficit disorder.

Children spend around 7 hours in front of a screen whereas their outdoor activities will average in minutes. Children are very comfortable indoors now, thanks to the devices that keep them engaged. They have lost touch with nature. Many don’t even know how enjoyable outdoors can be. Besides, it is very necessary for children to play outside. Many researchers agree that kids who play outside are happier, better at paying attention and less anxious than kids who spend more time indoors.

Spending time in nature can build their confidence.

There’s a lot less structure than most types of indoor play and they can choose how they interact with the nature around them. This gives them practice managing their own actions and encourages creativity and imagination.

Being outdoors can also teach them responsibility. For example, if they are in charge of watering a plant, they can learn that they must take care of living things to keep them alive.

Being outside gets kids moving, too. Regardless of what they’re doing, there’s usually more exercise involved than if they were sitting on the couch. Not only is exercise good for kids’ bodies, but it seems to make them more focused. This is especially helpful for kids with ADHD. Being outside also helps kids feel less stressed.

After the Covid19 Pandemic, we see an increase in parental fears about diseases and dangers of playing outside—despite evidence to the contrary.

As much as we concentrate on studies in My Giggle Garden, Preschool and Daycare, we encourage children to play outside and be in touch with nature as well.

We organized a picnic for our students in the heart of Turahalli forest. A glimpse into it below through pictures.

Focused - Children Learn Better When They are Not Disturbed

At times we interrupt the thought process of a child by interrupting or helping them. It is learned that attention span, concentration and being focused on a task at hand plays a huge role in learning.

Technology is a blessing to all of us, but it is not without side-effects. Studies show that the increasing use of technology has decreased the attention span of human being, especially children. According to a study done in the early 2000s, the average attention span of humans shrunk from 12 seconds to 8.25 seconds, which is shorter even than a goldfish. Surprisingly goldfish has a attention span of 9 secs. This was before the lockdown happened due to corona virus. Usage of screen time has been increasing and attention span decreasing every year.

We at Giggle Garden have our own set of games and materials which increase the focus and attention span of children. The games in My Giggle Garden also focuses on increasing their concentration rather than building competitive spirit. We do not have winners or losers - we only only participants.

Life is made easy when we feel our children are safe and quite with a mobile or tablet, but are they really safe? Should we really resort to the devices to help us with parenting?

Summer School Is Fun

Due to daycare, we do not close down completely during the month of April and May. Children have fun and different learning during these two months. We call it our summer school.

The goal is to be keep children engaged and not push them into boredom. The activities has to be balanced with learning, intellectual development as well as fine and gross motor development. Since it is a mixed group of children, communication learning becomes an important part of Summer school.

We feel so happy when children come over even when they have a option to stay back at home.
